To ensure a smooth international trip, there are other cell phone travel accessories which are essential and will complement your purchase of a special international SIM card.

External Batteries and Power Banks

Carrying external batteries will keep you connected when you’re hiking or traveling, and prevent you from spending excess time charging your phone, tablet, a laptop or any other gadget that may need recharging. The solution: Extra batteries in your travel bag!

All you need to do is simply charge the external batteries in advance, so when you need them they can easily charge your device. You’re traveling! You’d rather be spending that time exploring the sites instead of sitting around waiting for your cell phone to charge or getting caught without a phone in a foreign country. Carrying external batteries and power banks ensure that you have a double backup. Here are some recommended External Batteries and Power Banks options you can buy on Amazon:

Electrical Plug Power Adapters & Universal Adapters

Isn’t it frustrating when you reach your hotel and the power socket doesn’t support your charger? What do you do then? You can’t possibly rely on power banks throughout your stay – they also need to be recharged at some point. Having a travel wall plug and adapter(s) ensures you that your unlocked smartphone, laptop or any other electrical device will work. The ultimate peace of mind! The wall plug is compatible with your cell phone’s charger and the adapter makes sure your laptop works as well. Most smartphones can work globally and simply need an adapter, but some electrical devices may need a different current. Here are some recommended international plugs and adapter options you can buy on Amazon:

Waterproof Dry Bag Cases for Cell Phones

While most travelers do realize that they may need a travel plug adapter and an external battery, many do not consider another essential and relatively cheap travel tip. This is actually a no-brainer, especially if you plan on going on a water hike or kayaking in Israel or elsewhere. You’re in a foreign land, seeking adventure and the last thing you want to do is to sabotage your cell phone by dropping it in the lake while you’re enjoying the view or get it all caught up in the rain. Dry bags come in all shapes and sizes, and can keep both your smartphone and other valuables dry, even if you get wet.

World SIM Card

Do you travel a lot? Business trips? Much deserved personal vacations? Or just plain old wanderlust? We cannot survive without our phones. It’s impossible. It’s arguably one of the most essential items of our daily lives, and there is no alternate. The great thing about cell phones is that they can generally be used worldwide as long as you have cellular reception and/or access to WiFi. But that’s not always possible, or even if there is reception, it may be cost prohibitive. What do you do then? You need a world SIM card that travels with you, one that is as easy to use as adjusting the time on your watch. If you have a world SIM card that travels with you, it automatically works around the world and connects to the local cellular network.

The PoloSIM Explorer World SIM Card caters to your needs

  • It’s prepaid, so you don’t have to think about the heavy costs you may incur due to data roaming– you just pay as you go.World SIM card - PoloSim
  • PoloSIM World SIM card is your single SIM card solution no matter where you intend to travel; it provides coverage in over 190 countries. Since you don’t need a different SIM card for every other country you travel to, purchasing this one SIM card makes it a cost effective, hassle-free, and smart decision overall.
  • Just because it’s global, it does not mean it’s expensive. PoloSIM’s World SIM card call charges start at as low as 15 cents per minute.
  • Next on your agenda is data usage? Taken care of. It may even cost you less than the phone call, since the charges begin at 12 cents per MB. And you can easily choose and subscribe from a wide range of packages specially tailored to meet the needs of a regular traveler.
  • Not all of one’s business (or personal) trips are contained to the land. This one World SIM card holds the power to provide solid connectivity on over 150 cruise ships.

One of the biggest worries of a traveler with a local SIM card is that they have to subscribe to a package that requires them to pay data roaming charges. This adds to their traveling costs. PoloSIM World SIM card features free incoming calls in many locations, so you can receive as many calls as you’d like and you will not be charged extra for it. The SIM card comes with a US$10 credit to get you started. Since the service provides you with an international number along with a USA number, it’s a one-stop solution of sorts.

Pair the World SIM card with a multi-lingual customer service and you have yourself the perfect travel companion. Whichever corner of earth, or water, you’re in, this World SIM card has got you covered.

Dual SIM Smartphone Reviews

There are so many features we tend to look for in a smartphone nowadays – the latest operating system, the camera quality and the looks. Since many of our NES Mobile clients are international travelers, some prefer to use a Dual SIM smartphone. Using a dual SIM smartphone gives them the option of using a local SIM, like the NES Mobile Israel SIM card, which tends to be cheaper than their local provider’s roaming option, or to use the roaming option in certain cases. Some clients simply use the dual SIM phone to screen through calls and texts and use their NES Mobile Israel SIM to make outbound calls later on.

Customers often ask us which dual SIM phone we recommend, so we ran a short survey among some of our customers and did some online research to try to find the best options out there today. There are so many products out there with the same or similar features, that it’s very easy to make the wrong decision on a whim. Detailed comparisons come in handy for reaching a sensible conclusion. The following comparisons may better help you decide between these dual-SIM phones. These phones are best for people who tend to travel often, as they are compatible with international SIM cards.

Blu Advance 5.0 – Unlocked Dual SIM Smartphone

The BLU advance 5.0 is one of the cheapest dual SIM smartphone options out there, if not the cheapest. We would probably not recommend it as a day to day phone, or for heavy users. However, if you have a phone that is locked and are looking for a cheap, light-usage option to use just when you travel, this may be a good choice.

It has a bright metallic front and an eye-catching design. Its leather pattern has a nice finish, while its battery cover gives you a flexible and handy grip.

Pros

  • The display is backed with Infinite View Technology (IPS) to assure great angles display. Its 5 inch screen enables you to watch movies and videos on your phone without having to squint.
  • There are no international band restrictions and the set works perfectly worldwide.YOU DIDN’T RELATE TO MY COMMENT ON THIS.
  • It supports micro AND regular SIM cards, so you don’t have to get your old SIM modified (unless of course you have a NANO SIM).
  • The functionality of the phone is rather smooth – the calls, texting and all the other apps work well overall. This Dual SIM phone can perform multiple tasks, super smoothly as it’s powered by a 1.3GHz Quad-core processor. This robust power allows you to use the device with heavier, power-hungry apps. You can easily use any high graphic contents or heavy office docs with ease.

Cons

  • The internal storage is limited, so you will have to keep it clean and updated – which means a whole lot of rebooting. Some malfunctioning is reported during calls such as call drops and interruptions in voice.
  • Despite this, the phone has a wide screen but you cannot see the icons and other stuff properly in bright sunlight.
  • There is no default picture messaging option.
  • Even though the set is sleek in design, it’s very lightweight, and can feel hollow.
  • The battery life is not compatible for long hours of heavy usage.

Honor 5X Unlocked Dual SIM Smartphone

Huawei Honor 5x is considered one of the leading options for dual SIM smartphones. It is ranked highly for the future of smartphones because of its functionality and its capability to handle two SIMs at a time. It is backed with advanced fingerprint sensors which assures a good level of security. This phone could be used as your regular phone, both in the USA and when you travel abroad and need to use international SIM cards.

The external looks are impressive and you have the option to choose from multiple color variants, available in ergonomic, diamond polished and aircraft-aluminum.

Pros

  • Has external storage capacity of up to 128 GB.
  • The design is ultra-sleek due to the metal (aluminum) finish.
  • Speedy fingerprint reader that works well – within 0.5 seconds.
  • It features a 2GB RAM, which ensures smooth functionality without any lags.
  • Supports micro and nano SIM cards. Fully powered with 4G SIM (LTE) slots that are a combination of micro and nano SIMs. With a microSD card, you can get up to 128 GB storage space.
  • The beautiful HD screen is 5.5 inches wide and easily watchable in sunlight. The display is 1080p, and the 64-bit Octa-core processor runs HD movies seamlessly.
  • A sharp 13MP camera captures high-res photos and has a variety of photo and video filters.

Cons

  • Despite its 64-bit processor, it does not support live wallpapers well.
  • Google Pay is unusable because the phone lacks an NFC chip.
  • Glitches while unmounting the micro-SD card.
  • You can’t turn the camera shutter sound off.
  • The battery may last you all day, but it takes a long while to charge, since it does not have quick charge support.
  • You may also face some issues with the EMUI widget.

Samsung Galaxy S6 SM Dual SIM Smartphone

Samsung Galaxy S6 dual SIM Smartphone provides outstanding performance and is available in a slim & sleek frame and multiple colors.

This phone is smartly decorated with special glass that is known as “Protective Corning Gorilla Glass 4”.

Pros

  • This powerful phone is powered by a whopping 64-bit octa-core processor for a fast and robust performance. Compatible with international SIMs without causing any lags or issues.
  • The beautifully crafted 5.1 inch multi-touch screen with the AMOLED feature, makes this device a powerful palm-based machine.
  • Your data is secured inside the device under the protection of an advanced security system and fingerprint sensors.
  • Incredible battery time.
  • Wireless charging.
  • Works well with international 4G networks.

Cons

  • The LTE feature is not supported on both SIM cards.
  • Requires Android App support for quite a few actions.
  • A few lagging glitches when switching from SIM 1 to SIM 2, and vice versa.
  • There is no user-replaceable battery. A step down from the usual removable battery.

Motorola Moto G (3rd Generation) Dual SIM Smartphone

The only dual SIM Smartphone in our list with water resistant technology, Motorola Moto G is one of the most used phones in the market today.

Pros

  • Motorola Moto G is powered with a speedy quad core processor with outstanding battery life.
  • Motorola Moto G comes with 13 MP dual lens camera with built-in color balancing features. The 13MP camera has the capability to capture proficiently in broad daylight.
  • A wide variety of display customizations.
  • The built in memory is only 16 GB, which we think is not bad for a dual sim phone, but you can expand the memory with a micro-SD card.

Cons

  • The camera’s focus works better manually rather than automatically.
  • No NFC support.
  • Usage of a SIM-tray adapter makes the contacts susceptible to being misplaced.
  • Crashes after a certain period of heavy usage and overheats.

Having a dual SIM phone enables travelers, tourists and businessmen to save money on roaming costs, without the hassle of switching the SIM cards. It eliminates the process of replacing SIM cards every time you board a plane! Simply keep your world travel SIM card in your phone with your regular SIM.

4G LTE Network in Israel

Deployment of the 4G LTE network in Israel was launched only a year ago, but according to data just released from OpenSignal, Israel is, in fact, one of the world leaders in providing high speed LTE.

How Fast is the 4G LTE Network in Israel?

According to the OpenSignal study, Israel is ranked 4th when it comes to browsing speeds and the average download speed of LTE in Israel, stands at 28 Mbps (megabytes per second). This makes the surfing speed in Israel one of the world’s highest. That being said, since the 4G LTE network in Israel is currently being deployed around the country, only about half of Israel has LTE coverage. For example, Cellcom‘s 4G LTE network in Israel, used by NES Mobile covers about 44% of the network with 4G LTE, while the rest of the network is still 3G.

Is 3G in Israel Faster than 4G in Other Places?

Many NES Mobile customers told us that they found Israel’s 3G speed actually faster than some European countries’ 4G networks. We never truly investigated that, but there is a possible technical explanation why some may feel that it is so.

Even rural areas in Israel can get good mobile coverage. 4G LTE Network in Israel

Even rural areas in Israel can get good mobile coverage. 4G LTE Network in Israel

Mobile networks have parameters and can only support a certain number of users or a certain amount of bandwidth at any given time. Mobile network operators attempt to handle excess demand by putting up additional cell towers. Each mobile operator has their own cost-benefit analysis to determine their subscriber demand to cell tower ratio differently.  The higher subscriber to cell tower ratio, the slower the speed and reception. The lower subscriber to cell tower ratio, the faster the speed and the reception is better. This means that in areas with a large number of mobile phone users with relatively few cell towers, it’s a fairly safe assumption that the majority of users accessing 4G networks with a high subscriber/tower ratio may actually get a slower speed than a well-covered area in Israel that may only have 3G, but with a low subscriber/tower ratio.

As a matter of fact, a customer can be connected to their mobile carrier’s 4G network with full 5 Bars of signal strength, but downloading can be as slow as molasses. Which could explain why some customers found Israel’s 3G speed actually faster than other countries’ 4G.

What Data Speed Will I Actually Get in Israel?

As Israelis often answer, it depends…

According to open signal the average 4G LTE speed is 28 Mbps. Our internal testing on Cellcom’s network (which NES Mobile uses for its Israel 4G SIM card service) showed an average speed of about 23 Mbps on 4G, and 8 Mbps on 3G. Our internal testing is by no means scientific, but more of an internal poll and results can vary based on location and other factors.

Tu BiShvat in Israel

On January 24-25, 2016, we will celebrate Tu BiShvat (In Hebrew: ט״ו בשבט‎), a Jewish holiday occurring on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat. It is also called “Rosh HaShanah La’Ilanot” (Hebrew: ראש השנה לאילנות‎), literally “The New Year of the Trees.” In contemporary Israel, the day is celebrated from both a religious and ecological perspective.  Trees are planted to develop the land, and the holiday is celebrated religiously with a Tu BiShvat seder where local fruits are eaten.

Modern History of Tu BiShvat in Israel

The custom of planting trees on Tu BiShvat in modern times dates back to the end of the 19th century. Rabbi Ze’ev Yavetz, a scholar and historian, immigrated to Israel in 1887 and managed the local school in Zichron Yaakov. In 1890, on Tu BiShvat, Rabbi Ze’ev Yavetz led his students to plant trees, and the tradition to plant trees on this day was born. The Teachers’ Union and the JNF formalized this practice in 1908, and gave the day an educational focus on developing the land of Israel and improving the landscape.

Planting Trees in Israel on Tu Bishvat

Israel is the only country in the world to have a net gain of trees in the last 100 years, because of proactive tree planting. Tree planting reverses desertification, not only making the desert greener, but also adding nutrients that nourish the soil, transforming the desert to habitable land.

Israeli and Tourists Visiting in Israel – can join various special activities and plant a tree with the JNF.

Tu Bishvat Seder

In the 16th century, the Kabbalists of Tzfat (Safed) gathered for a Tu BiShvat Seder celebrated by eating fruit, particularly from the species that are singled out by the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land of Israel, including grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. On Tu BiShvat we’re meant to evoke the feeling that, “man is a tree of Tu Bishvat - mix of dried fruits - NES Mobile

Tel Aviv – The White City

In recognition of the 4,000 buildings which were built between the 1920s and 1950s in Tel Aviv, UNESCO declared Tel Aviv to be a World Heritage Site. Since most of the buildings colors are white, gray, beige were, it gave Tel Aviv the nickname, “The White City”.

History of Tel Aviv

Bialik House in Tel Aviv

Bialik House in Tel Aviv

In 1909, approximately 60 families congregated on a sand dune next to Jaffa and decided to build a new city in Israel, to be named: Tel Aviv. Most of the buildings were built in a fusion of Oriental and European styles and during the 1920s, the city began to spread towards what is known as Rothschild Blvd.

Bauhaus Tel Aviv Style

Bike Share, Tel Aviv Israel-NES MobileMany local architects adopted the “Bauhaus” style but with a local twist. Generally, Bauhaus buildings are mostly square, with terraces, narrow long windows, flat roofs, smooth façades, and plain geometric shapes. The colors used mostly are white, gray, beige, or black. The interior design has open space floor plans, and the focus is functional.

Over time, a unique Tel Aviv style emerged from the European/German Bauhaus style mainly due to warm and sunny weather.  Windows sizes were increased to accommodate better air circulation and awnings were positioned above the large windows and pergolas built on the roofs to provide shade. However, the most noticeable change of all was the design of large balconies.

Live Sport Streaming in Israel

Jaffa Street in Jerusalem

Jaffa Street in Jerusalem

Many students spending a year in Israel like to keep up with their favorite NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL or college sports teams and view live sport streaming in Israel. Some watch live sports at one of the restaurants or bars on Jaffa Street in Jerusalem, although many choose to watch the games alone or with friends in the comfort of their dorm or hotel room. With the right technology, the internet is their best answer for watching the latest American sports games in Israel – live.

Watching Game with Live Sport Streaming in Israel

What Do I Need in Order to Watch a Live Sport Streaming in Israel?

There are several options one can choose from order to view live stream sports games in Israel. However, there are three basic requirements needed: Internet, Device, and an online venue.

  1. Unlimited High Speed Internet Service in Israel

NES Mobile Pocket WiFi Mobile Hotspot - Unlimited Internet -MiFi

NES Mobile Pocket WiFi Mobile Hotspot – Unlimited Internet in Israel

The basic requirement is a reliable, unlimited  high-speed internet service in Israel. The ideal situation is to have a good DSL connection, but most students do not have access to unlimited DSL internet connections in their dorm rooms and they resort to using their mobile device data package for internet. That being said, effectively all of Israel’s cell providers “throttle” (slow down the speed of the download), which interferes with watching a live broadcast. The internet speed after usage of 3-5 GB, is clearly not enough to watch games in addition to the regular data usage. (Some providers do offer packages up to 5 GB or 10 GB of data, which may be enough for some.) NES Mobile offers students and other long-term renters a pocket Wi-Fi device with totally unlimited data.

“We usually see a major surge in data consumption on Sunday nights, carrying over to early Monday morning when we opt to watch NFL games”, says Avigdor Factor, co-founder of NES Mobile.

“During the NBA playoffs, we even had customers whose monthly data consumption was as high as 50 GB, due to the intensity and frequency of the games.”

NES Mobile also offers plans for those who are visiting Israel on a short-term basis, for a few days or weeks.

  1. Device – A PC, Mac, Smartphone or Tablet

israel-pocket-wifiWhether you have a laptop in your dorm room, or a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet, (most students in Israel have at least one of these devices), with access to DSL, games can be watched on virtually any device.

  1. Online Site and Venues to Watch Games

Some games are available online for all to watch and enjoy. However, often, due to broadcasting regulations, networks are restricted and are only allowed to show sports content on the internet in the United States and US Territories.

There are a few solutions, which are usually divided into two categories: Viewers who pay for subscription services or solutions for viewers who opt to watch for free. NOTE: We’re only covering the technology aspects and will not address the legal/regulatory issue which is complex and varies greatly depending on content and country.

a. Using a Slingbox in Israel

Slingbox allows you to view cable TV (from the USA) on any device. A Slingbox needs to be located with someone you know who has a residence in the US with a local cable subscription. With a Slingbox, you can watch all the channels the person who has the Slingbox has access to – from anywhere in the world. This applies not only to watching live football games for free, but to any other show or channel your host has access to.

b. A Paid Subscription to Sports LeaguesFootball online live streaming- n Israel

Most websites of major US sports leagues offer a live streaming portal to anyone who wishes to watch online. Prices vary based on your country location, as well as the sport.Special packages are often introduced during the playoffs.

c. Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and Proxies

Due to broadcasting regulations, some network’s sites are restricted and only allow access to sports content via the internet if you are in the United States and US Territories. They can restrict the content by blocking services for viewers with a foreign IP address. VPN services allow you to obtain an American IP address by routing your connection via an American VPN server. So even from outside the USA you may be able to watch USA-based TV streaming websites in Israel. The technology is similar to virtual private networks that employees often use for remote access to their office computer networks.
